9x12 Envelope Size: The Flat-Document Standard

The 9x12 envelope is the US standard for flat-document mailing. At 9 inches wide and 12 inches tall, it holds an 8.5x11 sheet completely unfolded with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clearance on all sides. Any document that needs to arrive without a crease belongs in a 9x12: contracts with original signatures, certificates, multi-page proposals, annual reports, photographs, and any 8.5x11 correspondence where fold lines would compromise the document's presentation or legal integrity.

The 9x12 exceeds the USPS letter-rate height limit of 6-1/8 inches and always mails as a USPS flat. There is no version of the 9x12 that qualifies for letter-rate postage. Large Envelope Materials: White, Kraft, and Tyvek

Large envelopes come in three primary stock materials. The right choice depends on what the contents are, how critical arrival condition is, and what postage cost is acceptable at volume.

White wove

Standard 24 lb or 28 lb white wove is the most common material for large envelope programs.
